This one is both: five days that gather everything first-time visitors come to Tanzania for — Tarangire's elephants and baobabs, the Serengeti's endless plains and big cats, and the Ngorongoro Crater's self-contained wilderness — into one private, carefully paced journey. The safari begins in Moshi and moves west into Tarangire, where the river draws large elephant herds in the dry season and the park's baobab-studded hills produce some of the best big-tusker photography in East Africa. It is the perfect opening chapter: close enough to reach in a morning, wild enough that the first hour inside the gate can feel like the middle of nowhere. From Tarangire the route climbs through the Ngorongoro highlands and drops onto the Serengeti's plains, game driving from the moment the vehicle passes the gate, because in this park the road itself is the attraction. You spend two nights in the central Serengeti, which buys you a full game-drive day in the Seronera valley — the park's most reliable big-cat country. Wildlife viewing may include lion prides on the kopjes, leopard along the riverlines and cheetah hunting on the open grass, alongside giraffe, elephant, topi, hartebeest and — depending on seasonal wildlife movements — segments of the migratory herds themselves. Your guide will adapt the route according to current conditions, the radio network and your interests, so no two departures follow exactly the same track. The final chapter descends into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn, six hours on a floor where black rhino, flamingo lakes, hippo pools and some of Africa's densest lion populations share the same viewpoint. This safari suits first-time visitors to Tanzania, travelers combining the trip with Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar, and anyone who wants the circuit's essential experiences without fixed groups or rushed transfers. How the days move.
Moshi → Tarangire National Park

After breakfast your guide collects you in Moshi for the journey west and south toward Tarangire, descending from Kilimanjaro's foothills across open Maasai steppe with the Rift Valley escarpment rising ahead. You enter the park around midday and the character of the country changes at once — colossal baobabs, rolling hills and the Tarangire River winding through savannah. A picnic lunch is taken inside the park before the afternoon game drive follows the river circuit, where in the dry season the water draws some of Tanzania's largest elephant herds, alongside buffalo, giraffe, oryx, waterbuck and the predators that track them. Wildlife viewing may include lions draped in acacia shade or, if you are fortunate, a leopard in the riverine trees; your guide will adapt the route according to current conditions and what is moving along the river that week. As the light fades behind the baobabs you leave the park for your lodge or tented camp in the Tarangire / Manyara area, arriving in time for dinner and a first night under wide African skies.

An early breakfast, then the long, beautiful drive north: out of Tarangire and up through the Karatu coffee country to the Ngorongoro highlands, where the road climbs past Maasai homesteads and mist-fed forests before the land opens onto the Serengeti's short-grass plains. Game viewing starts well before the park gate — the plains around Naabi Hill are themselves prime wildlife country — and a picnic lunch is often taken in sight of grazing herds rather than at a table. By mid-afternoon you reach the Seronera river valley in the central Serengeti, the park's most productive big-cat habitat, and the afternoon is spent game driving its riverlines and kopjes, where wildlife viewing may include lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, hippo and giraffe, with your guide reading the day's sightings and adapting the route as conditions change. Arrive at your camp in the central Serengeti as the light goes gold, for dinner and the first of two nights in the heart of the park.

Full day in the Serengeti

A full day with no transfers and no schedule except the wildlife. You set out at dawn, when the predators are still active and the plains are at their most atmospheric, exploring the Seronera valley and the surrounding riverlines, kopjes and plains according to where the morning's sightings point. Wildlife viewing may include lion prides, cheetah teaching their young on the open grass, leopard in the sausage trees, elephant, buffalo and resident wildebeest and zebra — and depending on seasonal wildlife movements, the great migratory herds themselves may be within reach, stretching in columns across the grass. Breakfast and lunch are picnics taken at scenic spots inside the park, keeping you in the field through the best hours of the day. In the afternoon your guide will adapt the route according to current conditions — following a reports of a kill, tracking a coalition of cheetah, or simply sitting with an elephant herd at a waterhole until the light turns amber. Return to camp for dinner and your second night in the central Serengeti.

A final morning game drive in the Serengeti makes the most of the early hours — the best light and the most active predators — before the road leads south-east out of the park and up into the Ngorongoro highlands. The scenery changes with every hour: short-grass plains give way to acacia country, then to the green, cool farmland around Karatu, and finally to the crater rim itself, where cloud forest wraps the road and the views down into the caldera open without warning. Along the way your guide may stop at a viewpoint overlooking the crater highlands or at Olduvai Gorge if you wish to add a brief visit (optional, time permitting). By late afternoon you settle into your lodge on the crater rim or in the Karatu highlands, positioned for tomorrow's dawn descent. Dinner and overnight are taken with the crater's mist and the sound of the highlands around you — and one of the best game drives of your life waiting for the morning.

The day begins early, because the crater rewards the dawn: you descend the inner wall as the mist lifts, six hundred metres down into a caldera that holds an entire ecosystem on its floor. Six hours of game driving follow, threading between open grassland, the Lerai forest, soda lakes fringed with flamingo and the permanent swamps where wildlife viewing may include black rhino, large elephant bulls, buffalo, hippo and the crater's famously large lion prides — all with the caldera's 600-metre walls as the constant backdrop. A picnic lunch is taken at a designated site on the crater floor, often beside the hippo pool, before the track climbs back to the rim in the early afternoon. From there the road carries you through Maasai country and the highlands back toward Moshi, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening in good time for onward flights or a final hotel night. The safari ends as it began, beneath Kilimanjaro — the fitting close to five days on the classic circuit.

Is five days enough for the Northern Circuit?+
Five days is the sweet spot for a first safari: long enough to reach the Serengeti without rushing, short enough to fit around Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar. Every park on this route earns its place, and nothing is done as a drive-by.
When should we travel for the best wildlife viewing?+
June–October generally offers the most favorable dry-season conditions, with wildlife concentrated around permanent water. January–March is also excellent and, when conditions allow, can be combined with Southern Serengeti / Ndutu experiences. Your guide will adapt the route according to current conditions whatever the month.
Can the safari start from Arusha instead of Moshi?+
Yes. The route begins in Moshi as standard, but collection in Arusha or directly from Kilimanjaro International Airport can be arranged — tell us where you will be and we will build the plan around it.
