Rongai Route (6 Days)

The six-day Rongai is the northern line in its compressed form: the mountain's only approach from the Kenyan side, climbing through cultivated Chagga farmland and true wilderness to camps beneath Mawenzi's volcanic spires, with the driest walking conditions of any Kilimanjaro route. It is the smart choice in the shoulder rains and for trekkers who want the north side's quiet without the Northern Circuit's extra nights. The structure follows the route's proven six-day profile: the gentle opening climb from Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp on the heath edge, then the steady traverse toward Mawenzi with a night at Kikelelwa Camp and the scenic high point at Mawenzi Tarn — a cold alpine lake cupped beneath the spires that few visitors to Kilimanjaro ever see. From the tarn the route crosses the moon-like Saddle to Kibo Hut for the summit attempt, following the northern rhythm: a midnight departure, Hans Meyer Cave in the dark, Gillman's Point at dawn on the crater rim, and the rim walk to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres when conditions and the group's condition allow. The honest arithmetic: six days compresses the acclimatisation profile that makes the seven-day Rongai stronger, and the summit rate reflects it. Trekkers with the flexibility should give the mountain the extra night; those whose calendar is fixed will find this the strongest short northern itinerary. Accommodation is camping throughout in private tents with full crew support, merging with the Marangu line only at Kibo Hut. Summit attempts are conducted according to weather, trail conditions, altitude considerations and the assessment of the mountain guide team.

DAY 01Montane forest

Day 1: Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp

The drive to the northern trailhead crosses Marangu's Chagga farmland and the pine plantations above Nalemoru village, where registration is completed and the crew assembles. The walking begins through the last of the cultivated land and into the mountain's drier northern forest — thin, open woodland quite unlike the dripping rainforest of the south — before the trail breaks into heath. Kilimanjaro's northern face is ahead the whole way, and the views back across the Kenyan plains open as you climb. Lunch is served en route, and the pace is deliberately gentle on the first day's grade. Simba Camp sits on the edge of the heath zone with a wide view over the plains below; the evening light here is one of the route's quiet pleasures. Dinner in the dining tent, the first evening health check, and an early night follow — the northern side's stars are among the trek's best.
