Machame Route — Kilimanjaro Treks

Machame is the Whiskey Route — Kilimanjaro's most dramatic standard line and its most popular, and we say both plainly. The route packs an extraordinary variety of scenery into seven days: dripping rainforest at the start, the open heather of the Shira plateau, the alpine desert around Lava Tower, the great Barranco Wall, and the summit approach beneath the southern icefields. No other route shows you so much of the mountain so quickly. The itinerary follows the classic seven-day profile, which adds a valuable acclimatisation day over the six-day version: rainforest to Machame Camp, the ridge to Shira, then the climb-high, sleep-low day through Lava Tower down to Barranco. From there the southern circuit unfolds — the dawn ascent of the Barranco Wall, the Karanga Valley crossing, and the deliberate short day to Barafu before the midnight push. On the Shira day, groups that arrive early and in good weather may visit Shira Cave with the guide — a lava-tube overhang near the camp used by early expeditions; the visit is strictly conditional on arrival time, weather and trail conditions, and is never guaranteed. Summit night follows the standard rhythm: a midnight departure, the switchbacks to Stella Point at sunrise, and the rim walk past the Rebmann glacier to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres before the long descent to Mweka. Machame is busier than Lemosho or the Northern Circuit — the trade for its accessibility and scenery — and it suits trekkers who want the classic Kilimanjaro experience on a strong acclimatisation profile. Summit attempts are conducted according to weather, trail conditions, altitude considerations and the assessment of the mountain guide team.

Every AscentWild trek is run by our own handpicked crew — senior guides, assistant guides, chefs and porters — never sub-contracted. Our guides are Wilderness First Responder trained, check your oxygen saturation, pulse and blood pressure twice daily, and carry emergency oxygen on every departure. Our overall summit rate stands at 98%.

We are proud partners of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), meeting or exceeding its standards for fair wages, load limits and crew welfare.

DAY 01Rainforest

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast at your Moshi hotel, the vehicle carries you to Machame Gate — the busiest trailhead on the mountain — where registration and park formalities are completed while the crew organises the loads. The first day climbs the whole rainforest belt in one sustained effort: a wet, wonderful, sometimes muddy track through giant figs, ferns and hanging moss, with the path crossing streams and switchbacking up the escarpment. Colobus monkeys are often heard in the canopy; the forest's humidity is total. Lunch is served en route by the crew, and the guide keeps a steady, unhurried pace on the long grade. By late afternoon you reach Machame Camp, set on a small ridge at the forest's upper edge with views breaking through the trees toward the Shira plateau. Dinner in the dining tent, the first evening health check, and an early night — tomorrow the mountain begins to open up.

QUESTIONS

Asked on every briefing call.

How fit do I need to be?+

You should comfortably walk six hours on back-to-back days before you arrive. Summit night is slow and long — the trick is pace and acclimatisation, not speed. Our summit rate last season was 96% overall, and 85% on this route.

What happens if I need to turn around?+

Your lead guide makes that call with you, and it is never a failure — the mountain will still be there. A walking assistant accompanies every guest group, so one person descending never ends the trip for the others.

How much should I tip the crew?+

Tipping is voluntary but expected if you are happy with the team. We recommend $280–350 per guest across the full crew, presented at the final breakfast in a small ceremony the guide will explain on day one.

Can my family meet the summit team?+

Yes — we arrange a celebration dinner in Arusha the evening after descent, and non-climbing partners can join any safari extension while you are on the mountain.
