THE FIELD NOTE
The Serengeti is not one habitat but several stitched together: the short-grass plains of the south where the wildebeest calve in February, the central Seronera woodlands where leopard sun themselves on the kopjes year-round, and the northern extension where the Mara River makes its terrible and magnificent demand each autumn. Because it is private, an AscentWild vehicle can be on the plains at first light and still be the only pair of binoculars in a thousand square metres. That is the version worth having.
